What it is

A lightweight gel-cream moisturizer from Korean indie brand IUNIK, formulated around a high concentration of Centella asiatica — the herb commonly called cica in K-beauty shorthand. The texture sits between a watery gel and a traditional cream, delivering hydration without a heavy or occlusive finish. It carries a 4.5-out-of-5 rating across more than 3,600 shopper reviews, a meaningful signal of consistent real-world performance across a large sample.

Who it's for

This moisturizer suits oily, combination, sensitive, and acne-prone skin that needs calming hydration without pore-clogging heaviness. It directly targets three concerns: active breakouts and post-breakout redness, surface dehydration, and chronic sensitivity or reactive flushing. Who should skip it: dry skin types seeking rich occlusive moisture will likely find it too light on its own, though it can layer under a heavier balm in winter. Anyone with a known allergy to plants in the Apiaceae family — which includes Centella asiatica — should patch-test before committing to daily use.

How to use it

Apply it as the moisturizing step in both your AM and PM routines: after toner and any serums or essences, and before SPF in the morning. Take a pea- to dime-sized amount, warm it briefly between your fingertips, and press gently into skin rather than rubbing, which can aggravate sensitivity. In a layered Korean skincare routine it slots in cleanly after a hydrating essence. Twice-daily use is reasonable — the formula is gentle enough for regular contact with compromised or reactive skin.

Key ingredients

Centella asiatica extract is the lead ingredient and the functional core of this formula. Its active compounds — asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid — work together to calm inflammatory pathways in the skin, support barrier repair, and provide antioxidant activity. Centella has a well-documented place in cosmetic dermatology, with research specifically supporting its role in barrier restoration and reducing visible redness. IUNIK positions centella high in the ingredient list, giving it a working role rather than a marketing cameo. The gel-cream base also relies on humectants to bind water to the skin surface, which addresses the dehydration concern alongside the calming function.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Lightweight, non-greasy texture that works for oily and combination skin
  • Centella asiatica is well-established for calming redness and supporting the skin barrier
  • Comfortable under SPF in an AM routine; not sticky or pilling-prone
  • Strong and consistent shopper ratings across a large review pool
  • Minimal ingredient approach with a clear, functional hero ingredient

Cons

  • Jar packaging exposes the full product to air and fingers at every use, which can degrade active compounds over time
  • At 60ml, the jar moves through quickly with twice-daily use at a generous application
  • Too light for very dry or severely dehydrated skin that needs occlusives
  • Centella alone does not address hyperpigmentation, textural concerns, or significant anti-aging goals

How it compares

If breakout redness is your main driver, this gel-cream stands on its own — but pairing it earlier in the routine with COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence as a hydrating layer makes practical sense. Snail mucin targets epidermal repair and deep moisture through a different mechanism than centella's anti-inflammatory action, and the two complement rather than duplicate each other. For shoppers whose primary need is lightweight daily hydration rather than active calming, COSRX Snail Mucin 92% Face Moisturizer is a comparable format worth weighing — though when sensitivity and inflammation are the central concerns, the IUNIK gel-cream's centella focus makes it the more targeted choice.

The verdict

The IUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream is a focused, honest moisturizer that performs within a well-defined lane: calming reactive skin, providing light surface hydration, and sitting cleanly in a multi-step routine without disrupting actives. It earns its strong ratings from shoppers managing sensitivity, post-breakout redness, and mild dehydration — and the cosmetic science behind centella backs those use cases. It is not the right choice for dry skin or for anyone expecting one product to do heavy lifting across multiple concerns. But for oily, sensitive, or acne-prone skin that needs a dependable daily hydrator with a genuine calming function, it is a well-constructed, no-hype option.

What shoppers say

★ 4.5average from 3.6k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers with oily, acne-prone, or reactive skin consistently praise this gel cream for its feather-light, non-tacky feel that absorbs fast and leaves no residue. Many report noticeably calmer redness and fewer breakouts within weeks, and several note that a small amount covers the whole face, stretching the jar further than expected.

The flip side: buyers with dry or dehydrated skin find it too minimal to feel truly nourishing. A few were caught off guard by how compact the 60 ml jar is in person, so manage expectations on size. Those needing a richer barrier-repair moisturizer may want to layer it or shop elsewhere.

It WORKS!!!

Skincare is extremely important and frugal to me, and as a newbie I’ve been doing A TON of research, so this is going to be a loaded review that details just about everything I’ve learned about this product and how it works with other products. Hopefully it helps others who struggle with oily skin and acne breakouts. I’m 21 years old and live in a dry, desert climate, so I have oily yet dry skin, meaning that due to the dry nature of my skin, i produce excess sebum which causes oiliness and (newly) breakouts. I can’t express how important this information is when looking for skincare products!!! Don’t look at just the benefits of certain products, make sure you know your skin type and it’s sensitivities before purchasing!! I follow a 3-5 step skincare routine, using 3 main products daily, and occasionally using a toner or an exfoliant. I haven’t tried any serums or essences yet due to my skins acne prone nature and needing to learn how my skin reacts to products first— essentially, if you’re new to skincare, don’t dive right into a 5-10 step routine, make a foundation that addresses your primary concerns first and learn how your skin reacts to certain products. I’ve swapped through many products all read, from Klair’s Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil to Acewell’s Licorice pH Balancing Cleansing Toner, to Missha’s Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream to Thank You Farmer’s SPF, and more, all of which did not help, despite being good products for others. The routine I currently run with is: Hanskin’s Pore Cleansing Oil BHA Etude’s Soon Jung pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser (which i may be swapping soon) and now Iunik’s Centella Calming Gel Cream + the occasional Green Tea exfoliant and Apple Cider Vinegar homemade toner (important to do research before using ACV!!) This cream has been the absolute cherry on top. My double cleanse plus a moisturizer was doing okay, it was an improvement but i was still getting breakouts and having an oily sheen afterwards. Iunik’s Calming Gel has tied it all together into a neat little bow. It’s only been 3 days and my acne is already clearing up 10-fold. All of my pimples have broken down into tiny spots and are going away quickring than ever, I haven’t had any new breakouts yet and my skin doesn’t feel slick and greasy. The only thing I have to say is do not apply this in your bathroom after showering, the moisture in the air will cause it to absorb poorly and you will be left with your skin feeling tight and dry. Wait until the humidity in the bathroom has aired out and it isn’t so hot before applying this product. When applied correctly, it works great! I was going to give this 4 stars, as I still feel that there may be a bit more moisture to be desired, but it does as advertised and truly works. so I’m going to be testing out some serums and essences to find one that’s compatible with my new routine to get that extra moisture boost. If this product continues working the way it has these last 3 days, it will easily become a staple in my routine. But summary of all this, if you have skin like mine that isn’t very sensitive, but struggles with excess sebum and acne, this product will most likely work for you!

Best thing since Sliced Cheese (sorry bread)

First off - thanks Hyram for the recommendation of this product. In less than a month, this has almost completely cleared my skin and helped prevent new acne. I have been trying everything for years to get rid of my constantly reoccurring adult acne along the cheeks and jawline. Nothing had worked even remotely close to this moisturizer. Acne is almost zapped away overnight, red spots have cleared, and the amounts of breakouts I have has decreased at least 90%. To start my routine, I use a oil cleanser (when I wear makeup) and follow up with a mild salicylic acid cleanser. I then use the Tea Tree serum from iUnik and then this moisturizer. Now, since it is winter where I live (freezing and dry) and since I have normal skin type that goes dryer in the winter and oilier in the summer, this moisturizer doesn't provide enough moisture for me, so I go in with a supplemental HA moisturizer as well. If you have oily skin, I think you will love this product and will not need to supplement with an additional moisturizer. It is a really lightweight formula that instantly gets absorbed by the skin. If you are on the dryer side, I would still recommend this product, but use it like a serum and then go in add an additional moisturizer. Do beware, with the recent reformulation some added fragrance is now on the list of ingredients. However, they are the last ingredients and I believe they are just there to lightly counteract the smell from the ingredient substitute that allowed them to eliminate silicone from the formulation. Frankly, you can't even smell it. Even with overly sensitive skin, I wouldn't worry that the fragrance will have too much of a negative impact. The other ingredients are so fantastic that they greatly outweigh the small amount of fragrance added. Overall, I'm so impressed by this product that I would recommend it over any other products available in the popular beauty stores like Sephora and Ulta.

BEST FOR OILY ACNE PRONE SKIN. SIZE IS SMALLER THAN EXPECTED.

I love it. It’s the perfect watery texture for my oily acne prone skin. The size was way smaller than I expected but it’s the type of product where a little goes a long way. It’s a bit too expensive. Not sticky at all. This product would not be suitable for dehydrated skin but it’s perfect for oily acne prone skin in a humid weather.

Helped my skin so much

I’ve been using this since January and use it everyday. My skin flared up out of nowhere and I didn’t know if it was perioral dermatitis or folliculitis or who knows. But I did research and this calming gel popped up. This with the beta glucan moisturizer and Vanicream Z bar cleared my skin up so quickly and I haven’t had another flare up since.

IUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream Moisturizer 60ml: frequently asked questions

What skin type is iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream best for?

This gel cream is formulated primarily for sensitive, oily, combination, and acne-prone skin. The lightweight, water-based texture absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film, making it comfortable in humid climates or under sunscreen and makeup.

Very dry skin types may find it insufficient as a standalone moisturizer in winter months and might layer a richer cream on top for added occlusion.

Is iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream good for acne-prone skin?

Yes — the formula is built around centella asiatica, which helps calm post-breakout redness and visible irritation without clogging pores. It skips common pore-clogging ingredients and keeps the ingredient list minimal, which suits reactive, acne-prone skin well.

It won't treat active acne on its own, but it works well as a soothing moisturizer alongside targeted treatments like a dedicated spot patch — for example, COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch.

Why is centella asiatica so popular in Korean skincare?

Centella (also called cica or tiger grass) contains compounds — asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid — associated with visibly calming redness and supporting the skin barrier. Korean formulators have long used it for post-procedure recovery and sensitive-skin routines.

Its appeal is broad: it plays well with most other actives, rarely causes reactions, and suits a wide range of skin types, making it a reliable choice for barrier-focused products like this gel cream.

What are the potential side effects of centella in skincare?

Centella is generally considered low-risk and well tolerated. Allergic contact dermatitis is possible but uncommon, particularly in people sensitive to plants in the Apiaceae family (carrots, celery, parsley). If you've had reactions to such plants, do a patch test on your inner arm before applying to your face.

For most users, the ingredient is calming rather than irritating, and it's often chosen specifically to reduce redness and sensitivity.

Do you apply this gel cream before or after moisturizer?

iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream is itself a moisturizer, so it belongs at the moisturizing step — after toner, essence, and any serums, and before sunscreen. Its gel-cream texture makes it the final hydrating layer in most routines.

If your skin is very dry, you can press a few drops of a hydrating essence like COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence underneath before applying this cream.

Is iUNIK a Korean brand?

Yes. iUNIK is a South Korean skincare brand that launched with a focus on clean, minimal formulations driven by plant-based active ingredients. The name stands for "I am UNIQUE," and the brand built its following around short, effective ingredient lists rather than elaborate multi-step products.

Most of the line centers on key botanicals — centella, propolis, and beta-glucan — keeping formulas accessible for sensitive and minimalist-routine enthusiasts.

Is iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream worth it?

For sensitive or acne-prone skin looking for a simple, lightweight daily moisturizer, it delivers on its core promise: the centella-forward formula soothes visible redness and layers easily under sunscreen. The 60 ml tube is compact but workable for daily use.

It's not a multi-corrector — don't expect it to address hyperpigmentation or deep lines. If your main concerns are breakout-related irritation, dryness, and redness, it earns its place in the routine.
