What it is

Bioderma Sensibio H2O is a no-rinse micellar water formulated specifically for sensitive and reactive skin. It uses a suspension of tiny oil-in-water structures called micelles to attract and lift makeup, sunscreen, and daily impurities from the skin surface without rubbing or harsh detergents. Originally developed in France and widely adopted in dermatology and esthetics practices, it is one of the most reviewed cleansers in the category with a 4.7-star average across more than 58,000 ratings.

Who it's for

This cleanser is best suited for people with sensitive, dry, or redness-prone skin who need a gentle first cleanse or a lightweight standalone option. It works well for those who wear light-to-medium coverage makeup and want a low-friction removal method. People dealing with conditions like rosacea, eczema flares, or post-procedure sensitivity often gravitate toward it because it requires no water, no rubbing, and no rinsing.

Those who wear heavy or waterproof eye makeup may find it less effective as a sole makeup remover — a dedicated oil-based remover or balm cleanser will do more thorough work. If you have very oily or congested skin, a rinse-off cleanser used after micellar water is likely still necessary for a complete double cleanse.

How to use it

Apply a generous amount of Sensibio H2O to a soft cotton pad and hold it gently against closed eyes or skin for several seconds before wiping — this soak time is the key step most people skip. Let the micelles do the work; avoid scrubbing. For the face, sweep outward in light strokes. You can use it morning and evening as a first cleanse, or in the evening as a standalone cleanse if your skin is dry or not congested and your makeup is minimal. No rinsing is required, though some people with sensitivity to residue prefer to follow with a splash of water. It sits at the very beginning of any routine, before toner, serum, or moisturizer.

Key ingredients

Micelles are the functional core of this formula — spherical surfactant clusters that carry a water-loving exterior and an oil-attracting interior, allowing them to bind to sebum, makeup, and particulate matter and lift them off the skin with minimal mechanical friction.

Cucumber extract contributes mild soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which is appropriate for its target sensitive-skin positioning. The formula also contains mannose, a simple sugar that is thought to support the skin's natural microbiome balance. The overall formulation is fragrance-free, soap-free, and alcohol-free — three factors that matter significantly for reactive skin types.

Pros & cons

  • Extremely gentle — minimal irritation potential for reactive or compromised skin barriers
  • No-rinse, no-rubbing format reduces mechanical stress on skin
  • Fragrance-free and soap-free formulation
  • Well-tolerated by post-procedure and rosacea-prone skin
  • Widely available and comes in a large 500ml size that lasts
  • Consistently high real-world ratings across a very large reviewer base
  • Does not reliably remove waterproof mascara or long-wear foundation without significant saturation
  • Not a true double cleanse — congested or oily skin types will still need a rinse-off cleanser afterward
  • Cotton pad usage adds ongoing material cost and waste
  • Contains some PEG-derived surfactants, which a small subset of sensitive-skin shoppers prefer to avoid

How it compares

If you prefer a rinse-off format and want something that can fully replace your cleanser rather than precede it, CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin is a strong alternative — it adds ceramides and hyaluronic acid to support barrier repair while still keeping the formula non-stripping. It suits dry and sensitive skin well and works as a thorough standalone cleanse that does not require a second step.

For oily or breakout-prone skin that needs active cleansing, neither of these micellar options is ideal; a foaming rinse-off formula would be more appropriate for that concern.

The verdict

Bioderma Sensibio H2O earns its reputation in the sensitive-skin space. It is one of the most consistently tolerated cleansers available, and for anyone with reactive, rosacea-prone, or temporarily compromised skin, the no-friction approach is genuinely useful rather than just a marketing angle. The main limitation is that it is not a complete cleanse for most skin types — it functions best as a first step in a double-cleanse routine or as a light maintenance cleanse when you are not wearing heavy makeup. Used correctly, within those parameters, it is difficult to argue with the formula or the real-world evidence behind it.

What shoppers say

★ 4.7average from 58.2k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers with sensitive, rosacea-prone, or acne-prone skin consistently praise this micellar water for dissolving full eye looks—liner, mascara, and shadow—without tugging or stinging. Many appreciate the fragrance-free, lightweight formula that leaves no greasy residue, and several use it as the first step in a double-cleanse routine.

The main gripe is a loose, poorly-fitting cap that can pop off in a bag or drawer—a real nuisance given the large bottle. A handful of reviewers also treat it as a pre-cleanse rather than a standalone wash, so those expecting a single-step solution may want to adjust expectations.

Whoa- I can’t believe this!

I wanted to try this product for a very specific purpose, I have been looking at facial cleansing wipes to use occasionally at bedtime instead of stripping my face by doing a full wash with cleanser and water. I rarely wear makeup, I spend my energy on finding the best skincare products for my skin and sunscreen. So at bedtime usually, I’m just taking off sunscreen and the day’s grime, or if I didn’t go out, the day’s moisturizing products. I tried several brands of moist facial cleansing wipes, and they left behind a greasy film and my face still feels like it needs a full wash. I would never want to skip properly cleansing my skin, and I usually do a full routine while I shower, but it would be nice to be able to occasionally do something quicker and more convenient without sacrificing on quality. I was hoping this product might cleanse well without needing to be rinsed or breaking me out on occasions where I want something quick and convenient, or maybe am travelling and need a basic routine. Wow, this product is not only perfect for that, it actually makes my skin soft and clean, you’d never know I skipped my regular cleansing and just used this Bioderma product with a cotton pad before my nighttime moisturizers/serum. It completely takes off the day’s water resistant facial sunscreen and any sweat or grime and leaves my skin very clean, soft, not dry, and it feels like there is no residue whatsoever. I also don’t break out or get clogged pores, it is just a clean, soft texture. One cotton pad with product is all takes for my entire face to look and feel just as clean as if I had used my regular products (a cleansing balm followed by a foaming cleanser and lots of rinsing with water). I have used this micellar water quite a bit since receiving it, and have not broken out or had clogged pores from “cutting corners” so to speak. And it cleanses very well. I can’t believe how well it cleanses without needing to be rinsed, without irritating my skin, without clogging pores or causing breakouts, and is suitable to use and then put on my serum and nighttime moisturizer. I’ve even used it the next morning to remove the nighttime moisturizers and then put on my SPF. I worried that I was going to cause my skin not to look as good if I didn’t properly wash and rinse with water but this product is so amazing. I have not yet used it to see how well it removes makeup since I rarely wear any, but just for skincare and cleansing without a full wash with regular water, it is so amazing. Not going to sugarcoat it, this is me wanting a convenient routine when I travel but this is also me being lazy on nights when I’m very tired or mornings when I am in a hurry. I consider this one of my few holy grail skincare products. I have picked up a smaller size for travel. I will keep this on hand always. I’m not even looking at moist wipes anymore. (This product is more gentle and leaves no residue as compared to a dermatologist recommended brand of face wipes). I’m most surprised that it cleans my face so thoroughly and that not rinsing does not cause any irritation or breakouts. Just wow. Totally worth the price. I was going to try other brands but this product has been so good there is no need to.

Gentle but removes makeup really well

I really like this micellar water. I used to use a different brand, but I feel like this one does a better job removing my makeup while still being gentle on my skin. I have sensitive skin with rosacea, and I wear liner, mascara, and eyeshadow daily. This removes everything from my eyes without needing a lot of rubbing or effort, which I really appreciate. After using it, my skin feels very clean but also soft, not stripped or dry. Overall, this has become my favorite micellar water and I’ll definitely keep repurchasing it.

Gentle and Perfect for Sensitive Skin

This is a great micellar water! I have very sensitive, acne-prone skin, and it hasn’t caused any redness or irritation at all. It removes makeup very easily and leaves my skin feeling clean and refreshed afterward. I also like to follow up with a mild face wash as part of a double cleanse routine; overall, it feels gentle, effective, and perfect for sensitive skin.

Go to cleanser that’s simple, effective, and skin-friendly!

I love this micellar water. It removes my makeup on the first pass with no harsh rubbing or irritation. Even around the eyes, it feels soothing rather than stinging, which isn’t always the case with makeup removers. It’s also fragrance free and lightweight, so it doesn’t leave behind any greasy or sticky residue. Another major plus is the no-rinse formula. You can use it quickly with a cotton pad and be done, which makes it perfect for busy nights or when you just don’t feel like doing a full routine! It leaves your skin feeling clean, calm, and moisturized. Seriously gentle yet effective.

Bioderma Makeup remover

I like this product — the gentle formula cleanses, hydrates, and protects my face well. I usually use it in the morning before putting on makeup rather than at night. I gave it 4 stars because the top/cap comes off easily. Other than that that works well for my skin

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Cleanser 500ml: frequently asked questions

What is Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water used for?

Bioderma Sensibio H2O is a no-rinse cleansing water that uses micelles — tiny cleansing molecules suspended in soft, purified water — to lift away makeup, sunscreen residue, and daily impurities without rubbing or rinsing. It works on face, eyes, and lips and is specifically formulated for sensitive, reactive skin that flushes or stings with conventional cleansers.

Do I have to wash my face after using Bioderma micellar water?

For a light daily refresh or minimal makeup, rinsing isn't required — that's the main appeal. For heavier makeup or SPF, following with a rinse-off cleanser is the smarter move to avoid residue sitting on skin. Many users treat Sensibio H2O as step one of a double-cleanse, finishing with a gentle wash before moisturizing.

Can I use micellar water on my face every day?

Yes. Sensibio H2O is formulated to be gentle enough for twice-daily use. Its fragrance-free, alcohol-free formula keeps irritation risk low even with frequent application, making it a practical morning refresh or nightly first cleanse for most skin types, including sensitive and combination skin.

Can I use micellar water if I have eczema?

Many people with eczema-prone or sensitized skin find Sensibio H2O a comfortable option: it skips fragrance, alcohol, and harsh surfactants that commonly trigger flares. That said, eczema presentations vary widely, so patch-test first and avoid use during active flares without dermatologist guidance. For a rinse-off alternative, CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is another dermatologist-recommended choice for compromised skin barriers.

Does Bioderma micellar water dry out your skin?

Sensibio H2O is among the least drying cleansers available. It relies on a very mild micelle system with no stripping alcohols or sulfates, preserving the skin barrier better than most foaming washes. Very dry skin types may still want to follow with a moisturizer, but dryness caused by the formula itself is rarely a complaint.

What do dermatologists think of micellar water?

Dermatologists broadly regard micellar water as a low-irritation cleansing format, and Bioderma Sensibio H2O is one of the most frequently cited formulas in clinical settings — often recommended for post-procedure recovery, rosacea, and reactive complexions. The consistent caveat: it may not fully remove water-resistant sunscreen on its own, so a rinse-off step is worthwhile on heavy-SPF days.

Is Bioderma micellar water pore clogging?

Sensibio H2O is widely regarded as non-comedogenic and unlikely to clog pores for most people. Micelles attract and lift impurities off the skin's surface rather than pushing anything deeper. If you're acne-prone, remove it thoroughly after use — surfactant residue left on skin for extended periods can occasionally contribute to congestion.
