What it is

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara in Carbon Black is one of the drugstore's most enduring eye makeup staples, first introduced in the 1980s and still a bestseller decades later. The formula is built around a thick, wax-based consistency designed to coat and plump each lash from root to tip in a single pass. The curved, densely bristled brush separates as it builds, delivering a dramatically fuller look without requiring layering expertise.

Who it's for

This mascara is a strong fit for anyone who prioritizes volume over length—if your lashes are naturally thin or sparse, the pigment-rich Carbon Black shade creates strong definition that reads well even without eyeliner. It works on straight lashes because the curved wand helps encourage a slight lift at the root. People who want a precise, spidery, or ultra-lengthening effect may find the formula too dense for that look. Those with sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers should patch-test, as with any mascara, but the formula has a long track record with a broad audience. It is not ophthalmologist-tested for contact lens wearers by default—check the current packaging for updated claims.

How to use it

Start with clean, dry lashes—any residual moisturizer or eye cream on the lashline can break down mascara faster. Begin at the base of the lashes and use a gentle zigzag motion as you pull the wand upward toward the tips; this separates lashes while depositing product evenly. One coat delivers noticeable volume; a second coat applied before the first is fully dry builds additional density. Avoid pumping the wand in and out of the tube, which pushes air in and dries out the formula prematurely. Mascara fits at the very end of an eye routine, after eyeshadow, liner, and lash curler. For the most impact with a lash curler, curl before applying—never after the mascara is dry. Replace the tube every three months to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination.

Key ingredients

L'Oreal does not publicly disclose the complete ingredient breakdown for Voluminous Original, and the specific actives vary slightly by retail market. That said, volumizing mascaras of this type typically rely on a combination of film-forming polymers to bind pigment to the lash shaft, waxes such as carnauba and beeswax to thicken and build, and iron oxides for the deep, opaque Carbon Black pigmentation. These wax-heavy formulas create the characteristic fullness the product is known for, though they are generally not designed to condition or treat lashes—this is a purely cosmetic, wear-focused formula.

Pros & cons

  • Very high volume payoff with minimal effort, even for beginners
  • Carbon Black shade is richly pigmented and true-black, not muddy or gray
  • Widely available at every major drugstore and mass retailer in the US
  • Nearly 100,000 shopper reviews averaging 4.5 out of 5 reflects genuine, sustained consumer trust
  • Curved brush works well on a range of eye shapes
  • The thick formula can flake or smudge on oily lids if not set with powder around the lashline
  • Not a lengthening mascara—shoppers expecting extension will be disappointed
  • The dense consistency can build up on the brush quickly, making precise corner application harder
  • Removal requires a dedicated oil-based or micellar makeup remover; water alone will not fully dissolve it

How it compares

If length and a feathery, lifted fan is the priority rather than raw volume, Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara in Blackest Black takes a different approach: its flexible film formula and tapered brush are engineered for extension and curl rather than thickness, making it a better pick for fine lashes that tend to weigh down under heavy product. The two mascaras actually complement each other used together—Sky High as a lengthening base coat, Voluminous on top for body—but head-to-head, your choice comes down to whether you're building width or reach. If you're putting together a full eye look, pairing any volumizing mascara with a well-defined brow makes a meaningful difference; the e.l.f. Instant Lift Dual-Sided Brow Pencil is a cost-conscious option worth adding to the routine.

The verdict

Voluminous Original has earned its reputation honestly: it reliably delivers a bold, full-lash effect that many shoppers find difficult to replicate with newer, more complicated formulas. It is not a do-everything mascara—it won't lengthen dramatically or hold a curl on its own without a primer—but for classic, high-pigment volume at a drugstore price point, it remains one of the most dependable options on the shelf. The sheer volume of long-term repeat buyers in its review count suggests this is a product that keeps delivering consistently, not just on first use.

What shoppers say

★ 4.5average from 99.4k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers consistently praise this mascara for building impressive volume and making lashes look noticeably fuller and darker. The formula layers well without immediate clumping as long as you give each coat a moment to set, and it holds curl throughout the day. The colored shades—particularly burgundy and blue—earn enthusiasm from buyers who find them more flattering than standard black, especially for lighter eye colors.

Those choosing non-black shades should know the color payoff is subtle and may require two or three coats to read clearly—one reviewer with hazel eyes was unconvinced the purple shade actually enhanced their eye color as advertised. The formula is not waterproof, so it's a skip for anyone needing long-wear in humid conditions.

The best

If youre a brunette with blue eyes, get burgundy! Honestly, it’s life changing. I don’t know why I’ve been using black mascara my whole life. This color suits me so much better and looks incredibly natural. I’ve tried just about every mascara out there that exists over the past 30 years, and this is one of the best. Pros: The formula is great. Normally, I clean off the wand to prevent clumping when applying, but this formula is so easy to apply, that isn’t necessary. I like a natural look, so I only wear one coat and I’m good to go. No clumping. No weird spidery thickness. I like to have defined lashes, but I don’t like to look like I’m wearing mascara, and this does just that. I work in kind of a crazy environment under varying conditions, and this stuff stays put. At the same time, it’s also easy to wash off at the end of the day and doesn’t leave your eye area all stained. I’ll be buying this forever. And for the price?! It’s a steal. Cons: I kinda love trying out all kinds of makeup, and now I have no reason to try any different mascaras.

“It aint True if it ain’t Blue “

So check this out, Imma a blue mascara person I’ve used this back in the days maybe once I don’t know why I didn’t stick to it , but went and branched off to use “Nicka K waterproof blue mascara “ which is good except for the fact it doesn’t come sealed, whether bought in the beauty supply store or directly from their website . So that’s the only flaw with that . Rinsing it off was easy no oil just water and gently rubbed off it would come off easily. Well this L’Oréal blue “that’s not even waterproof “ but acts the same way as Nicka K . It acts like it’s waterproof (despite not being waterproof ) it’s good quality. And then same taking off process water and gentle rub , voila ! If you want to refrain from looking like the rest of the masses with black mascara switch up to blue . It ain’t true if it ain’t Blue

Classic volume that makes lashes pop

This mascara is a classic for a reason—it adds noticeable volume and makes lashes look fuller and darker with just a few coats. The formula builds well without clumping too quickly, which helps achieve a more dramatic lash look. It also holds curl fairly well throughout the day without flaking. The brush separates lashes nicely for a defined finish. Overall, it’s a reliable everyday mascara that consistently delivers bold lashes.

Its Purple Mascara! Takes 2 or 3 coats to see it.

It is ok. It does show up with atleast 2 or 3 coats. Not a lot of clumping as long as you wait a few seconds before applying next layer. I have hazel eyes and I had always read deep purple mascara would bring out the hazel colors. I cannot confirm that to be true. I don't notice a difference. I have always used deep black mascara and think that looks best all around. This purple was different. Maybe it is me just not being used to it. I think my lashes look bizarre when the sun is shining on my face because the purple color really stands out. I'm on the fence about the color. The mascara itself isn't bad. Goes on easy. Doesn't run during wear. Washes off fairly easy with warm water and facial soap. Wouldn't buy it again but I'll use it here and there, just to not waste it.

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara Carbon Black: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between carbon black and regular black mascara?

Carbon black is a specific pigment made of near-pure carbon particles that produces an exceptionally deep, opaque jet-black finish. Many "black" mascaras rely on iron oxides or pigment blends that can read as slightly brown, navy, or soft black in certain lights. The Carbon Black shade in L'Oréal Voluminous Original is formulated for maximum darkness with no warm or cool undertone — just true, dense black.

What does carbon black do in a mascara formula?

Carbon black functions as the primary pigment, coating each lash with an intensely dark, buildable layer. In the Voluminous Original, it works alongside the formula's thickening agents to make lashes look noticeably fuller and dramatically darker from the very first coat. Because the pigment is so concentrated, it tends to show up boldly even on fine or light-colored lashes.

Is carbon black safe to use in eye makeup?

Carbon black is an FDA-permitted colorant for cosmetic use, including eye area products, and has been used in mascaras for decades. L'Oréal Voluminous Original is formulated to meet US safety standards. As with any mascara, replace the tube every three months, avoid pumping the wand (which pushes air and bacteria into the tube), and discontinue use if you experience irritation.

Did L'Oréal change the Voluminous Original mascara formula?

Yes — L'Oréal has quietly updated the Voluminous Original over the years, and longtime fans have flagged changes in consistency and brush shape compared to older versions. The current formula still delivers the buildable, volumizing look the mascara is known for, but it runs slightly wetter than earlier iterations, which some users find affects longevity and flaking. It's not imaginary if your tube feels different from one you bought years ago.

What shade exactly is carbon black — is it warmer or cooler?

Carbon Black sits at the coolest, darkest end of the black spectrum — no brown, no navy, no softness. It reads as a clean, neutral-to-slightly-cool true black on the lash. This makes it a strong choice if you want maximum contrast on fair skin or simply prefer your mascara to look as close to ink-black as possible.

Is L'Oréal Voluminous Original a good mascara for mature lashes?

It holds up well for older lashes because its volumizing formula adds visible weight and fullness without requiring multiple heavy coats that can overwhelm thinner or sparser lashes. Apply one coat, let it set for 30 seconds, then add a second only where needed. The deep Carbon Black shade helps lashes read as more defined and bold even with minimal effort. If length is a bigger priority than volume, a lengthening formula like Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara is worth comparing.

Which other mascaras also use carbon black pigment?

Carbon black appears across many drugstore and prestige mascaras — it's one of the most common intense-black pigments in the category. The Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High in Blackest Black is another widely used carbon-pigmented option with a very different (lengthening, flexible) formula. The distinction usually comes down to the brush shape, formula thickness, and additional ingredients — not just the pigment itself.
