What it is

The COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner is a lightweight, water-based chemical exfoliant formulated to clear congested pores, reduce breakouts, and improve uneven skin tone. At 5.07 fl oz, it delivers acid exfoliation in a toner format designed to slot in right after cleansing—before serums and moisturizer. It sits within COSRX's core lineup, a K-Beauty brand known for efficacy-focused formulas that keep the ingredient list purposeful.

Who it's for

This toner is best matched to oily, acne-prone, and combination skin types dealing with clogged pores, blackheads, recurring breakouts, or a dull and uneven complexion. It suits those who want a single step to introduce chemical exfoliation without adding a separate exfoliating serum to their routine.

Those with dry, sensitive, or compromised skin should approach with caution—chemical exfoliants can disrupt the moisture barrier when skin is already reactive or under-hydrated. Anyone using prescription-strength retinoids or other prescription actives should check with a dermatologist before layering additional acids.

How to use it

Apply after cleansing, before serums, essences, and moisturizer. Sweep across the face with a cotton pad, or press in with clean fingertips if you prefer to minimize product lost to absorption. Start two to three evenings per week to assess tolerance before increasing frequency. Because chemical exfoliants raise photosensitivity, follow with a broad-spectrum SPF every morning without exception—this is non-negotiable, not optional.

Key ingredients

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and the backbone of this formula. Unlike water-soluble acids that work on the skin's surface, salicylic acid is oil-soluble—meaning it can penetrate into the pore lining to dissolve the sebum and dead cell buildup that leads to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne papules. It also carries mild anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce the redness around active blemishes rather than simply drying them out.

As the product name indicates, it also incorporates an AHA component targeting surface-level concerns: loosening dead skin cells, smoothing texture, and helping to gradually brighten a dull or uneven tone. Together, the two acid types work on different layers—pore depth and skin surface—making the combination suited for a broader range of concerns than either acid alone.

Pros & cons

  • Salicylic acid penetrates the pore lining—more effective for oily and acne-prone skin than surface-only exfoliants
  • Toner format is easy to layer into an existing K-Beauty or multi-step routine
  • Addresses both pore congestion and surface dullness in a single product
  • Consistently well-reviewed: 4.5 out of 5 across more than 8,200 ratings
  • Mandatory daily SPF is required—an easy habit to skip, but skipping it undermines results and increases sun damage risk
  • Not appropriate for daily use at the outset; most skin types need to build tolerance gradually
  • Dry or sensitive skin types may experience irritation or barrier disruption
  • Should not be layered with retinol or prescription actives without professional guidance

How it compares

If your priority is hydration and barrier support rather than active breakout control, the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence takes a different direction entirely. Built around snail secretion filtrate, it focuses on moisture retention and skin recovery without any exfoliation—making it a natural complement to this toner when alternated on off-nights.

For active, surfaced pimples, this toner works as prevention and overall treatment; the COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch fills the spot-treatment gap. The hydrocolloid patches isolate individual blemishes overnight to absorb fluid and block contamination—a targeted approach that pairs well with this toner's broader, routine-level exfoliation.

The verdict

The COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner is a dependable, straightforward choice for oily and acne-prone skin types who want to build a consistent exfoliation habit. Its salicylic acid is the real workhorse—especially valuable for anyone whose breakouts originate from congested, sebum-clogged pores. Like any acid exfoliant, it requires proper introduction (start slow, always use SPF) and thoughtful layering with other actives. Within those reasonable guardrails, it earns its strong rating. For dry or sensitive skin, it's not the right fit. For oily or combination skin dealing with recurring breakouts and uneven tone, it's a well-supported, unpretentious option worth building a routine around.

What shoppers say

★ 4.5average from 8.2k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers across skin types—oily, combination, dry, and sensitive—consistently praise this toner for visibly reducing breakouts, smoothing texture, and fading post-acne marks without feeling heavy or sticky. Reviewers highlight how quickly it absorbs, appreciate the minimal scent, and note their skin looks brighter and more balanced within weeks of regular use.

The main caveats come from brevity: several reviewers had used it only days before writing, so long-term durability of results is less documented. Those with extremely dry or reactive skin should introduce it gradually, since AHA/BHA actives can cause sensitivity, and results vary by how consistently the product is applied.

I finally found my holy grail product for acne

It's been a very long journey of me searching for the perfect product that doesn't make me break out and is not too oily for my oily skin. I did have my reservations before ordering this but I figured it is worth a try. I have occasional acne, a few pimples here and there, along with old acne scars that never faded. I've tried vitamin C serums and salicylic acid before to no avail. Here is my nightly routine before bed: 1. Hada Labo Hyaluronic Foam Cleanser 2. COSRX AHA/BHA Toner 3. Hada Labo Gokujun Hyaluronic Lotion 4. COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence 5. Nature Republic Aloe Gel (as an extra moisturizer when I feel like it) 6. SoonJung Panthensoside Cica Balm (only for spot treatments or those colder nights) The first few days it is not noticeable that it's doing anything different. However after a few weeks, I noticed I've been getting a lot less breakouts. And my acne scars have started to fade. After two months, my complexion has evened out even more (the scars are still there, but it's just less red and blends in more with the rest of my face). Then I decided to stop using the AHA/BHA toner spray for a week because I was running low, and I immediately started getting a few pimples. I guess that's my sign that I must start stocking this product regularly! I have read reviews on AHA/BHA products in general and it's advised to use this product at night because it will make your skin more sensitive. If you use it in the day, you MUST use sunscreen afterwards. If you're on the fence, I say give this product a try and see if it works well with your skin!

My skin feels so fresh and balanced — definitely a staple now!

I’ve been using this COSRX toner for a few weeks and I can already see a difference. It’s super lightweight, absorbs quickly, and leaves my skin feeling clean and hydrated without any stickiness or irritation. I love that it doesn’t have a strong fragrance and feels really gentle, even on my sensitive skin. It’s helped reduce little bumps and made my face feel smoother and more balanced overall. I use it after cleansing and before serum, and it layers perfectly. If you’re looking for a toner that’s simple, effective, and won’t strip your skin — this is it. Definitely repurchasing!

Finally!

I only had this product for 2 days , so I dont have a long-term use review. But for the last 2 days I've been using this product every morning and every night after washing. Heres some insight about me- I am 27, I have combination skin, really dry around my jawline, chin, and forehead, i get breakouts on my cheeks, oily tzone, I get hormonal acne too...the works :/ I can already tell that this product is going to become a permanent item my routine. my fine lines around my eyes are already softening. I had very big terrible blemishes on my cheeks, all are almost gone. My skin seems more supple, and hydrated, but is not becoming oily or drying out, not even after wearing makeup all day This, so far, is the holy grail product I've been looking for. My routine is very short and sweet, I dont do the 10step or 12step cleansing routine. For anyone who is interested in what products are really working well for me I use ❤Cleanse- [THE FACE SHOP] Rice Water Bright Cleansing Oil + Cleansing Foam ❤Toner- Cosrx AHA/BHA CLARIFYING TREATMENT Toner ❤Essence- Vena Beauty Advanced Snail Intensive Repair Essence {{Every other day I use essence masks from Face Shop on top of this snail essence}} (I don't use spf, because spf is in my BB cream) ❤Eye Cream- Cosrx Honey Ceramide Eye Cream That's all I use, and my skin has improved so much. All the products i listed are incredible. And I really recommend them to anyone who is starting a new routine, and its really basic, so you can slowly add in other things if you want, like your masks, scrubs, serum, moisturizers, night creams, etc.

Best treatment toner

I’ve been using the COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner for a while now and I’m really impressed with the results. My skin feels smoother, looks brighter, and my texture has improved a lot. It’s gentle on the skin, doesn’t leave my face feeling dry, and helps keep my pores looking cleaner. I also noticed fewer breakouts and my skincare products absorb better after using it. Definitely a great toner for anyone wanting a gentle exfoliating product!”

COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner 5.07 fl oz: frequently asked questions

What does the COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner actually do?

This toner uses salicylic acid (a BHA) along with AHA exfoliants to dissolve dead skin cells, unclog pores, and brighten uneven tone. It's designed to address acne-prone, oily, and dull skin in one step. Regular use can help reduce blackheads, smooth texture, and fade post-breakout discoloration over time.

Can I use this toner every day?

Daily use is fine for most people, but start with every other night to see how your skin responds. Because it contains active exfoliating acids, overdoing it can cause dryness, irritation, or a compromised barrier—especially for sensitive skin. If you experience redness or flaking, scale back to 2–3 times per week and always follow with moisturizer.

How do I layer the COSRX AHA/BHA toner in my routine?

Apply it to clean, dry skin after cleansing—using a cotton pad or patting it in with clean hands. Wait 1–2 minutes before layering the rest of your routine: essence, serum, then moisturizer. For example, the COSRX Snail Mucin 92% Face Moisturizer pairs well afterward to replenish the skin barrier. Always use SPF in the morning when using exfoliating acids.

What should I avoid mixing with this toner?

Avoid using it on the same application as other actives like retinol, benzoyl peroxide, or vitamin C—combining these can cause irritation and reduce effectiveness. Also skip other exfoliants (scrubs, additional AHA/BHA products) in the same routine. If you use a prescription topical, check with your dermatologist before adding acid exfoliants.

Does this toner help with blackheads and dark spots?

Yes, on both counts—with realistic expectations. Salicylic acid penetrates into pores to loosen the debris that causes blackheads, so consistent use typically reduces their appearance. The AHA component helps fade post-acne dark spots by accelerating cell turnover, but significant hyperpigmentation takes several weeks of regular use to show improvement.

Which COSRX toner is best for my skin type?

The AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner is the right pick if your main concerns are acne, oiliness, clogged pores, or dull texture. If your skin is dry, sensitive, or you're focused on hydration and repair rather than exfoliation, COSRX's hydrating toners or the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence would be a gentler alternative.

What are the main side effects to watch for?

The most common side effects are dryness, mild tingling, or temporary redness—particularly when you first start using it. Overuse can weaken the skin barrier, making skin feel tight or more reactive. Salicylic acid also increases sun sensitivity, so skipping sunscreen while using this toner raises your risk of irritation and pigmentation. Discontinue if you experience persistent burning or peeling.
