What it is

The ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint in Cherry Ade is a lightweight, water-based liquid stain designed to deliver a buildable wash of color on both lips and cheeks. The formula absorbs quickly and dries to a semi-matte, skin-tinted finish that mimics the look of a natural flush rather than a traditional lipstick or blush. Cherry Ade sits in the coral-cherry range — bright enough to read as playful, diffused enough to blend into a believable complexion tint.

Who it's for

This tint is best suited for oily to combination skin types who prefer a barely-there texture and dislike the feel of heavy lip products. If your goal is a fresh, just-bitten lip or a youthful cheek stain with minimal product awareness, this format works well. It also suits warmer or olive undertones particularly well given the cherry-coral hue of this shade.

Those with very dry or flaky lips should approach with caution — water tints can cling to texture and emphasize dry patches rather than smooth over them. If you need significant moisture or an occlusive lip treatment, this is not a standalone solution. It also isn't the right call if you want precise, opaque color payoff.

How to use it

On lips, apply directly from the doe-foot applicator, starting at the center and pressing outward. Work quickly — the water-based formula begins setting within seconds. For a softer gradient effect, press and blend immediately with a clean fingertip. On cheeks, dispense a small amount onto fingertips and stipple onto the apples in light layers, building intensity gradually.

In a morning routine, apply after skincare has fully absorbed and after any base makeup. A thin layer of unfragranced lip balm applied a few minutes before use can help the tint glide more evenly on lips without compromising staying power significantly. Daily use is appropriate — the formula is not abrasive, and water tints are among the gentler pigmented products in most routines.

Key ingredients

ETUDE has not published a detailed ingredient breakdown for this specific product through widely available channels, so specific actives cannot be confirmed here. What can be said about water tints as a category is that they are built on water-soluble dye systems rather than heavy pigment suspensions, which is what creates the translucent stain effect. The low oil and wax content is what makes these formulas feel virtually weightless and allows them to set quickly without a tacky residue. If you have sensitivities or specific ingredient concerns, checking the full INCI list on the packaging or retailer listing before purchase is recommended.

Pros & cons

  • Dual-use versatility — works on both lips and cheeks, consolidating two steps into one product
  • Lightweight texture — water-based formula feels like nothing on skin, no heaviness or stickiness
  • Natural flush effect — delivers a diffused, lived-in color rather than an obviously made-up look
  • Well-reviewed at scale — 4.2 out of 5 stars across more than 20,500 reviews suggests broad, consistent satisfaction
  • Travel-friendly size — compact and mess-resistant compared to cream or powder blush formats
  • Unforgiving on dry lips — sets quickly and can emphasize texture if lips aren't well-prepped
  • Limited staying power on oily skin — like most water-based formulas, it can fade faster on very oily cheeks without a setting powder
  • Shade range is narrow — Cherry Ade reads as a warm coral-cherry; those who prefer cool pinks or neutrals may find it pulls orange on certain undertones
  • Ingredient transparency — full INCI list is not prominently publicized, which is a barrier for sensitive-skin shoppers

How it compares

If you like the multi-use concept but prefer a creamier, more emollient texture, the e.l.f. Monochromatic Multi Stick in Sparkling Rose is a solid domestic alternative. It's a balm-stick format that deposits pigment with a dewy rather than stained finish, making it more forgiving on dry lips and easier to blend on cheeks — though it won't deliver the same skin-tinted translucency that a water tint does. The two products solve slightly different problems: the ETUDE tint is for those who want color that looks like it's coming from within the skin; the e.l.f. stick is for those who want comfort and a glossy flush.

The verdict

The ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint in Cherry Ade earns its place in a routine where ease and naturalism are the priority. It consolidates lip and cheek color into one low-maintenance step, and the water-tint format genuinely delivers on its promise of a weightless, flushed finish. The 4.2-star average across a large reviewer base reflects real-world satisfaction rather than novelty hype. That said, it is not a product for everyone — dry lips need prep work, and anyone expecting opaque or long-wear coverage will be disappointed. Used within its intended scope, it's a thoughtful, well-executed K-beauty staple.

What shoppers say

★ 4.2average from 20.5k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers consistently praise the Cherry Ade shade for its vivid, fresh red tone and the pleasant cooling sensation on application. The watery, non-sticky formula wins fans for layerability, and several reviewers find it convincing as a cheek tint, where wear time feels more satisfying than on lips.

The recurring caveat is longevity on the lips — many report the color fading significantly within one to two hours, making frequent touch-ups necessary. Shoppers seeking an all-day stain that survives meals or long outings may find it falls short; it suits those happy to reapply throughout the day.

Beautiful color, I wish it would last longer.

I have mixed thoughts about this lip stain. I am in the market for a true red lip stain that lasts all day. The cherry ade is a beautiful red stain that borders on pink. As it fades it becomes more pinkish. The photo attached is when I first applied it with 3 layers. It is watery and because of that you have to be very careful to keep it from bleeding into the fine lines. It works best on exfoliated and well moisturized lips, but you have to moisturize them ahead of time. It comes with a sponge tip applicator which makes it easy to fill in but difficult to line the lips with. I have been using it for a couple of weeks and applying liberally. It doesn't look like I have used any so it will last a long time. The stain smells like candy, but the scent fades quickly. As far as I can tell it doesn't really taste like anything, but I am not trying to taste it. I think I could get used to the application and make it work, but I need something that lasts all day, and this isn't even close. For that reason I am not likely to purchase it again. It was worth trying though because that price is right.

Actually great just need to figure out how to make it last!

I’d give this 5 stars if I could get it to last over a hour! At first I loved it! Loved the colors , loved the stain! I actually still love it but it disappears after 2 hours completely after one hour it has minor remnants. I still love it! My daughter can get hers to last for 4 hours so maybe it’s me🤷🏻‍♀️ but either way I’d still recommend it and I would still buy again! The price is great colors are beautiful just need to play with it a bit to get a good solid few hours I guess!

Nice… red! tint NOT stain

I’ve had this tint for about a year now- it is a nice bright red shade, depending on how much you apply. This is a very watery lip tint and removes easily with water (not the best longevity). It is not sticky at all! It applies very easily with the wand in the container. I have packed this with me before and it leaked in my makeup bag, so store this upright :) This is a good option if you need a quick and not long lasting lip tint, but I don’t generally recommend it for practical uses (not easy to travel with… you’d likely have to reapply) If you are searching for a red lip color that does not apply like a traditional “creamy” lip stick, this is perfect! It allows your lips to remain their “natural texture”. Keep in mind that this product is a tint, so it is not meant for super long occasions, a stain would be more ideal for long lasting color.

Lovely Color and Feels Nice

The only downside is that it's not super long-lasting. It fits my lifestyle, but I can see some being displeased if they don't want to reapply it several times a day. I work in a cubicle and keep a bottle at my desk (strawberry). I apply it when I get up to socialize, but also when I just want to because the cool feeling and light fruit scent is really nice! When applied, it DOES look super pretty. The gradient look isn't hard to do by swiping up and down instead of across your lips, and when it dries the color is bright at first but tones down into a subtle hint of color. Orange is actually my favorite one, and I take that to go out with friends or shopping. It doesn't turn my lips bright orange or anything, but gives my lips some color that looks natural with my skintone (white/sea mix).

Cheaper and better than most popular tints

Definitely one of my favorite tints. It has a nice cooling feeling when you apply it, and when used as a liquid blush, I personally feel like it’s long lasting. On the lips, maybe not as much, but that probably depends on the person and what they do throughout the day. It’s nice and pigmented, so a little goes a long way, making the product last longer overall. The colors are also really nice. It does stain relatively fast as well. It’s not sticky at all, and since it’s a water tint, you barely feel it on the skin after you apply it + it looks more natural. 5 star product for me :)

ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint Cherry Ade Lip & Cheek Stain: frequently asked questions

What is the ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint in Cherry Ade?

The ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint in Cherry Ade is a lightweight, water-based Korean lip and cheek stain that delivers a sheer, juicy flush of cherry-red color. The watery gel formula sinks into the lips rather than sitting on top, giving a natural-looking stained effect that mimics the look of naturally flushed, bitten lips.

How long does the ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint last on lips?

Wear time typically runs 4–6 hours on lips with light eating and drinking. Because it's a stain rather than a traditional lipstick, the color bonds lightly to skin and fades gradually and evenly rather than smudging off in patches. For longer staying power, apply in thin, buildable layers and let each layer dry before adding the next.

Is this lip tint good for cheeks too?

Yes — the dual lip-and-cheek use is one of its strengths. Tap a small amount onto the apples of the cheeks and blend quickly with fingertips for a soft, flushed look that coordinates with your lip color. Because the formula is very fluid, start with less than you think you need; it's easier to add more than to tone it down.

Can the ETUDE Water Tint darken or stain lips long-term?

Like most pigmented tints, Cherry Ade can leave a faint temporary stain on lips for an hour or two after the top color fades — this is normal and part of the "tint" effect. It does not cause permanent darkening with regular use. If you have naturally dry or uneven lips, the color may cling unevenly, so exfoliating and moisturizing beforehand helps.

Is the ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint safe to use?

ETUDE is a well-established K-beauty brand (owned by Amorepacific) that meets Korean cosmetic safety standards, which are generally rigorous. The water-based formula is free from heavy oils and waxes, making it suitable for most skin types. As with any cosmetic, check the ingredient list if you have known sensitivities, and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Is ETUDE a luxury brand?

No — ETUDE (formerly Etude House) is an accessible, mass-market K-beauty brand targeting a younger demographic with playful packaging and affordable products. It sits firmly in the drugstore-to-mid-range tier, not luxury. That said, its Dear Darling Water Tint line has earned a genuine reputation for quality that punches above its price point.

How do you apply the ETUDE Dear Darling Water Tint for the best result?

Start on moisturized lips for even coverage. Apply directly from the doe-foot applicator, patting from the center of the lip outward, or use a fingertip to blend for a softer gradient effect. Allow 30–60 seconds to dry before pressing lips together. For cheeks, dab a drop onto the back of your hand first, then pick up with a fingertip and blend onto skin immediately — the formula dries fast.
