What it is
The NYX Professional Makeup Lift & Snatch Eyebrow Tint Pen in Espresso is a felt-tip brow marker designed to deposit precise, hair-like strokes along the brow arch. Its fork-shaped nib separates to mimic the look of individual hairs rather than laying down a flat wash of color. Espresso is a deep, cool-leaning brown that reads true on dark brunette and black hair.
Who it's for
This pen is a strong fit for anyone with medium-brown to black brows who wants definition that looks like enhanced natural hair rather than drawn-on liner. It suits all skin types, though people with oily lids or brow bones may find wear time shorter without a setting powder over the top. It is not the right shade choice for fair, blonde, or warm-auburn brows — Espresso will read too dark and cool against lighter hair; NYX offers lighter shades in the same line for those tones. Anyone who finds powder brow products too soft or pencils too waxy will appreciate the ink-style formula here.
How to use it
Start by shaking the pen once and pressing the tip lightly on the back of your hand to regulate ink flow before touching your face. Working in short, upward flicks that follow the natural direction of hair growth, begin at the arch and move toward the tail — this is where brows need the most definition. Fill any sparse patches at the front with a very light hand, since the inner third of the brow looks most natural when kept soft. Apply after skincare has fully absorbed and after any face primer; applying over a fresh layer of moisturizer will shorten wear. For all-day hold, dust a translucent or brow-tinted setting powder over the finished result. Daily use is appropriate.
Key ingredients
NYX does not publish a full ingredient deck for this product in our data, so specific actives cannot be confirmed here. Felt-tip brow pens in this category typically rely on film-forming polymers to anchor pigment to hair and skin and fast-evaporating solvents that contribute to the quick-dry feel. There are no advertised conditioning or growth-supporting ingredients in this formula — it is purely a color and definition product.
Pros & cons
- 4.4 out of 5 stars across more than 32,000 shopper reviews signals broad, consistent satisfaction
- Fork-tip applicator is purpose-built for realistic hair-stroke results
- Espresso depth reads well on dark brown and black hair without looking orange or ashy
- Ink dries down quickly with low transfer once set
- Felt-tip format allows precise placement in sparse zones
- Shade is too deep for fair, blonde, or light-auburn brows
- Felt tips are prone to drying out if the cap is left off between uses
- Multiple overlapping passes can build into a heavier, more artificial finish
- No nourishing ingredients for brows that are over-plucked or fragile
- Ink flow can be inconsistent toward the end of product life
How it compares
The Lift & Snatch Pen is a single-purpose brow tool; the comparison products available on this site are from different makeup categories. If you are assembling a fuller eye look to complement defined brows, a lengthening mascara like Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara pairs well with a bold brow without competing for attention. For a warmer, more editorial finish, e.l.f. Monochromatic Multi Stick in Sparkling Rose can add a flush to cheeks and lids that balances a strong brow. Within the brow category itself, shoppers deciding between a pen and a pencil should weigh precision (pen wins) against blendability and fade control (pencil is more forgiving for beginners).
The verdict
The NYX Lift & Snatch Eyebrow Tint Pen in Espresso earns its well-reviewed status for a specific type of brow user: someone with dark hair who wants hair-stroke precision at a drugstore price point and is comfortable with a felt-tip tool. The fork nib is genuinely useful, and the quick-dry formula holds up through a normal day with a setting powder assist. The limitations are real — shade range matters, technique has a short learning curve, and the formula offers nothing for brow health beyond color. Go in knowing it is a finishing and definition tool, not a treatment, and it will likely deliver exactly what you need.
What shoppers say
Shoppers consistently praise the ultra-fine tip for creating convincingly hair-like strokes that look far more natural than pencils or pomades. Many note it performs well through long days and even summer heat, and that layering two shades produces a softer, more dimensional result. Several reviewers switched from pricier brands and found this held its own.
The main caveat is a learning curve—light pressure is essential, since a heavy hand quickly reads as overdone. A few users found the formula can migrate on very oily skin by late in the day, so those with significant oil in the brow area may want to set it with a clear wax or powder.
I apologize for the long review, so buckle up. If you are oily with little to no brows like me, and tired of being disappointed, read on! Quality: I have tried so many products for my brows, including the expensive Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pomade. This is by far THE BEST eyebrow product on the market that I have tried. I shave my already thin sparse eyebrows (I like to create different makeup looks) , and have extremely oily skin, and sweat a lot in the summer. So I have a blank, and difficult canvas to work with. I need a product that I can depend on, so I’m not worried going throughout the day hoping my brows don’t rub, or sweat off lol. This is it!! It’s amazing! I tested it out sweating my ass off dripping down my forehead, as well as sleeping with them on, as my oils come through the worse when I sleep. (I could fry an egg). If you’re an oily girl like me, it will eventually break down anything lol but this is the ONLY product I’ve tried, where I didn’t have to touch up until the next day, and wasn’t worried about it rubbing, or smudging off over the tiniest things. I have spent the night at my friends house, and still wake up with brows. If I lay on my stomach all night, they fade a bit, but better than waking up to none, or product smudged all over my forehead. A little blot and fill, then I’m good to go. I wouldn’t rub them aggressively though, once your oils come through full throttle. Performance: This gives very precise and consistent hairlike strokes! It doesn’t bleed blobs of ink on my skin. I’m used to drawing on my brows everyday and with this, I can get it done under 2 min!! HUGE Time saver, and it looks so natural!! I can’t wait to try this with my model in a bottle eyebrow sealer! That made even the crappiest products last a little longer. I just wanted to see how this performed on its own. (Tip) If you’re oily, get PanOxyl oil control mositurizer to prep your skin for the day. Let it set, and cover with tinted powder to get rid of the white cast. Use the NYX brow marker, and pair it with the model in a bottle eyebrow sealer here on Amazon, if you can. It will be even more sweat/oil proof! Bottom line: I would definitely recommend! Don’t sleep on this product. Especially if you have oily skin/thin brows and struggling for a natural look. When I get paid again, I’m gonna stock up on these! NYX has once again left me speechless! I’m in love❤️ (UPDATE): After a while, the ink comes out almost like water paint than the crisp hair like lines I was doing before. Color is not as dark, and crisp like when I first bought it, but still good. I’ve been using it almost everyday, and I think it’s just starting to run low. Still looks fairly natural, and long lasting. Still would by again, and recommend. Very decent product for the price. Just wished the ink flow was consistent for longer. I might just store it upside down to keep the tip saturated. (FURTHER UPDATE): Over a year later, this is still my go to brow product! Love it, and use it daily! I’ve also used Godefroy eyebrow tint for when I go on vacation, or busy weeks where I don’t feel like drawing them on everyday. I use this pen to fill in areas that fade after a few days. That tint stains the skin too, so you don’t need eyebrow hair to use it lol. Lasts me about 3-4 days before I start to look like gollum😂With these two by my side, along with my other products mentioned for daily use, I can be confident and save time doing my brows. 🙌
Read on Amazon ↗(First pic is during first application, "after" pic is after about 8 hours of summer wear. I do not have eyebrows anymore, this is all product) I know that like, there are enough reviews of this lol. But I'm so happy with it so far that I'm reviewing it anyway in case it helps anyone with no eyebrows at all. I have basically none. I pull them out. The pics are on oily skin at maybe 3 p.m. and again after work at about 11 p.m. I bravely wore these to work even though it's 100°f outside and even though they might disappear or turn green. They didn't! I forgot to take a fully done pic but I wanted to show--there's basically no eyebrow, it's all pen except like 8 hairs lol I just got this pen today and I've used it one time. It's Espresso. It's summer now and I'm extremely oily even in the cold months. I started out with an oily face today, since I did brows in the afternoon. I didn't use any powder or primer or anything. I wasn't sweaty or damp when I put it on, just oily. It may be an issue using this in a humid room after showering These pics are way TMI for me lol but I wanted people to see how this works on textured/rough skin with no real hair, just like 5 o'clock black eyebrow shadow. The pen color is great, I have dark dark chestnut hair with a silver stripe and light light yellowish skin with red spots. It's almost my natural brow hair color. I usually use Wet n Wild micro pencils in brunette because it's such a good color and it's so hard for me to find stuff that works on my oily textured skin. But it is really hard to get the inside corners right, it can't do real hairline strokes, and it settles into my wrinkles and smears. The hair texture is giving CGI cat fur or turf, lol. But it's my first time doing it. My impression is that the brush is too soft. It's really hard to do straight strokes especially on my left side (I'm very right handed). They come out a little wiggly. Still 5000x better than usual though You have to use a light hand; be mindful, intentional and slow; and start each "hair" in a strategic spot, you can't just randomly flick lol. I figured that out pretty quick but it's hard to control. Also I'd see a white spot/line I'd try to cover it and the soft brush would curve or bend and not cover the white spot. Like if you have any high spots the brush may go around them. I had to go back in and carefully cover white spots with like the very very very tiptop of the brush. But still, again, first time! And it took under 15 min. If you start the hairs in random spots instead of strategically it looks more bushy and grassy lol. They're definitely not perfect but you have no idea how much better they look, and the process is WAY less stressful and mistakes are easier to fix. It's way easier to draw on hairs than to try to ombre a wax pencil. It's way easier to manage the depth of the color by just adding hairs and covering more skin I wish so bad that it were waterproof! I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop lol so I'm guessing I'll have to come back and lower my rating but I'm really hoping not
Read on Amazon ↗This gives the most natural, hair-like brows out of any brow product I’ve used. The tip is super fine and makes it really easy to create realistic strokes, and it’s surprisingly quick once you get the hang of it. I actually like using multiple shades to create a softer, more faded front and more defined tail, which makes the brows look even more realistic. It’s become my go-to brow product because it’s easy to use, lasts well, and gives such a natural result.
Read on Amazon ↗So I had the urban decay brow blade and it was fine until later on it turned into a reddish brown color and I have dark eyebrows. So I had to get a new product. I obviously wanted to get something more affordable this time so I saw this nyx, and it honestly was the only one that had like a true black shade which was perfect. And I tried it out and works great. It’s so liquidy and sharp that it creates eyebrow hair perfectly and it stays on a while. Would recommend!
Read on Amazon ↗Love!! I’ve always used eyeshadow to fill in my brows. This pen is so easy to use and looks much more like natural eyebrow hairs. The tip of the pen is very thin so you can get those hair like results. I apply verrrrry little pressure and it works like a charm!
